Walk into any supermarket and you will be confronted with dozens of toothbrushes and toothpastes promising different benefits. Making the right choice can feel overwhelming, but the principles are straightforward.
Choosing a Toothbrush
Always choose a toothbrush with soft bristles — medium and hard bristles can damage enamel and cause gum recession. The head should be small enough to reach all areas of your mouth, including the back teeth. An electric toothbrush with a round oscillating head and pressure sensor is the gold standard, particularly for patients who tend to brush too hard.
Choosing a Toothpaste
Adults: Use a fluoride toothpaste containing at least 1,350–1,500ppm fluoride. This is the most important feature — fluoride remineralises tooth enamel and is the single most effective cavity-prevention measure available.
Children under 3: Use a smear of toothpaste containing at least 1,000ppm fluoride.
Children 3–6: Use a pea-sized amount of at least 1,000ppm fluoride toothpaste.
Be cautious of whitening toothpastes with high abrasive agents — used excessively, they can wear enamel. Sensitivity toothpastes containing potassium nitrate or stannous fluoride can be very effective when used consistently for 4–6 weeks.
