Family Dental Clinic
Most people brush their teeth twice a day — but are you doing it effectively? Here is our dentist's step-by-step guide to getting it right.
Most people brush their teeth twice a day — but are you doing it effectively? Poor technique can leave a significant amount of plaque behind even after brushing. Here is our step-by-step guide to cleaning your teeth properly.
Brushing Technique
- Use a soft-bristled manual or electric toothbrush with a small head.
- Apply a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste (at least 1,450ppm for adults).
- Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gumline.
- Use small circular motions — not a back-and-forth scrubbing action which can damage enamel.
- Brush all surfaces: outer, inner and chewing surfaces of every tooth.
- Brush for a full two minutes — use a timer if needed.
- Spit out the toothpaste but do not rinse — letting the fluoride remain on your teeth gives extra protection.
Don't Forget These Steps
- Floss or use interdental brushes daily to clean between teeth where the brush cannot reach.
- Use a fluoride mouthwash at a different time to brushing (e.g. after lunch) for extra protection.
- Replace your toothbrush or brush head every 3 months.
