How to Floss Properly: Our Dentist's Step-by-Step Guide

Family Dental Clinic

Flossing is one of the most important — and most overlooked — steps in your daily oral hygiene routine.

Flossing is one of the most important — and most overlooked — steps in your daily oral hygiene routine. A toothbrush, no matter how good, cannot reach the spaces between your teeth where plaque and food debris accumulate. That is where floss comes in.

How to Floss Correctly

  1. Take about 45cm (18 inches) of floss and wind most of it around each middle finger, leaving 2–3cm to work with.
  2. Hold the floss taut between your thumbs and forefingers.
  3. Gently guide it between your teeth using a zigzag motion — never snap it into the gums.
  4. Curve the floss into a 'C' shape around each tooth and slide it under the gumline.
  5. Use a fresh section of floss for each gap.

If you find traditional floss difficult to use, interdental brushes, water flossers or floss picks can be just as effective. The best tool is the one you will actually use consistently.

We recommend flossing at least once a day, ideally before bedtime. If you would like personalised advice on your home care routine, ask one of our hygienists at your next appointment. Call 01243 771171 to book.
