Managing Dental Anxiety: How We Care for Anxious Patients
Dental anxiety is one of the most common phobias in the UK, affecting millions of people and preventing many from seeking the care they need.
Dental anxiety is one of the most common phobias in the UK, affecting an estimated one in four people to some degree. Severe dental phobia prevents many people from seeking regular care — often leading to more complex dental problems that require the treatment they fear most. At Family Dental Clinic we are experienced in helping anxious patients and take their concerns seriously.
How We Support Anxious Patients
- Taking the time to listen. We always invite anxious patients to tell us about their concerns before any examination begins. Understanding the source of the anxiety helps us adapt our approach.
- Agreed stop signals. You are always in control. We agree a signal (usually a raised hand) that means we stop immediately, no questions asked.
- Explain everything first. We follow a tell-show-do approach, explaining and demonstrating each step before proceeding. Nothing happens without your knowledge and consent.
- Topical anaesthetic. We always use topical numbing gel before any injection to minimise discomfort.
- Gentle pace. We never rush anxious patients. If you need a break, we stop.
