Oral Health Milestones: What Parents Should Know as Your Child Grows
Your child's dental development follows a predictable sequence of milestones, each with its own oral health considerations.
Your child's dental development follows a predictable sequence of milestones, each with its own oral health considerations. Knowing what to expect at each stage helps you provide the best possible care.
0–2 Years: First Teeth
The first teeth (lower central incisors) typically emerge at around 6 months. Begin brushing as soon as the first tooth appears using a small soft brush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste. Book your child's first dental visit by their first birthday.
3–6 Years: The Primary Dentition
By age 3 most children have all 20 baby teeth. Continue regular dental visits every 6–12 months. Help your child brush until they are 7–8 years old — young children lack the dexterity to do it effectively on their own.
6–12 Years: Mixed Dentition
The permanent teeth begin erupting around age 6, starting with the first molars and lower central incisors. This is a particularly important time for fissure sealants, which protect the deep grooves of the molar teeth from decay.
Teens: Permanent Dentition
By the mid-teens most permanent teeth (except wisdom teeth) are present. Orthodontic assessment may be appropriate. Good habits established in childhood will serve your teenager for life.
