Sugar-Free Alternatives: Are They Really Better for Your Teeth?

Family Dental Clinic

Sugar-free products have been marketed as tooth-friendly for decades. But are they really better for your teeth? The answer is more nuanced than you might think.

Sugar-free products have been marketed as tooth-friendly for decades. Switching from sugary drinks to their diet counterparts is certainly better for your blood sugar, but the news for your teeth is more nuanced than the marketing suggests.

Many sugar-free drinks — including diet fizzy drinks, sugar-free cordials and energy drinks — are still highly acidic, with a pH that can erode tooth enamel over time. Repeated exposure to these acids weakens the protective outer layer of your teeth, making them more vulnerable to sensitivity, decay and staining. The problem is not the sugar itself but the acid — which is often present in sugar-free versions too.

The safest drinks for your teeth are still water and plain milk. If you enjoy sugar-free fizzy drinks, drink them quickly rather than sipping throughout the day, use a straw, and rinse your mouth with water afterwards. Chewing sugar-free gum containing xylitol after meals can also help neutralise acids and stimulate saliva flow.
