What Is a Dental Emergency? Signs You Shouldn't Ignore
Family Dental Clinic
Knowing whether your dental problem constitutes an emergency can make a significant difference to the outcome of treatment.
Knowing whether your dental problem constitutes a true dental emergency can make a significant difference to the outcome of treatment. Some situations require urgent same-day attention, while others can wait for a routine appointment. Here is our guide to help you decide.
Situations That Require Urgent Attention
- Knocked-out tooth: This is a time-critical emergency. Keep the tooth moist (in milk or in your cheek) and call us immediately. Reimplantation is only possible within 1–2 hours.
- Dental abscess: Severe toothache with facial swelling, a high temperature or difficulty swallowing requires same-day attention.
- Broken tooth with sharp edges: Can damage soft tissues. Cover sharp edges with dental wax if available and call us.
- Significant trauma to the mouth: Any injury involving broken jaw, deep laceration or significant tooth displacement.
Situations That Are Urgent But Can Wait a Day or Two
- Lost filling or crown (cover with sugar-free gum temporarily)
- Moderate toothache without swelling
- Broken denture
