What to Expect During Your Root Canal Treatment

Family Dental Clinic

Root canal treatment has an undeserved reputation as one of the most feared dental procedures. In reality, modern root canal treatment is comfortable and often no more involved than a large filling.

Root canal treatment has an undeserved reputation as one of the most feared dental procedures. In reality, modern root canal treatment is comfortable, effective and often no more involved than having a large filling placed.

Step by Step

  1. Anaesthesia: We apply a topical numbing gel before the local anaesthetic injection. Once fully numb, you will feel pressure but not pain throughout the procedure.
  2. Access: A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.
  3. Cleaning: Specialist instruments are used to remove the infected pulp tissue and clean the canal walls. We use irrigation solutions to disinfect thoroughly.
  4. Shaping and filling: The canals are shaped and then filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, which seals them permanently.
  5. Restoration: The tooth is restored with a filling or crown to protect it and restore full function.

Most root canal treatments at Family Dental Clinic are completed in one or two appointments. After treatment, some tenderness for a few days is normal — over-the-counter pain relief manages this well for most patients.

If you are experiencing tooth pain that may require root canal treatment, call us on 01243 771171 to arrange an assessment.
