Your Guide to Fighting Tooth Sensitivity: Causes and Solutions

Tooth sensitivity — that sharp, short-lived pain triggered by hot, cold, sweet or acidic stimuli — affects around 1 in 3 adults. Whilst it is rarely dangerous, it can significantly affect quality of life. Understanding the cause is the first step to finding an effective solution.
The most common cause of sensitivity is exposed dentine — the layer beneath the enamel that contains tiny tubules leading to the nerve. Dentine can become exposed through enamel erosion (caused by acidic food and drink), gum recession, aggressive brushing, tooth grinding (bruxism) or as a result of dental treatment. Decay or a cracked tooth can also cause sensitivity, which is why a dental check-up is always recommended if you experience new or worsening symptoms.
Treatment options range from desensitising toothpastes and fluoride varnishes applied in practice, to more definitive solutions such as bonding, a gum graft for recession or a crown for cracked teeth. At Family Dental Clinic we will identify the underlying cause of your sensitivity and recommend the most appropriate treatment. Call 01243 771171 to book.
